Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must have an interest in mystery writing (fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and/or screenwriting).
  4. Must be currently enrolled in college at the undergraduate or graduate levels.

Description: This scholarship is available for currently enrolled U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who have an interest in mystery writing (fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and/or screenwriting).

Additional Information: The Helen McCloy/MWA Scholarship for Mystery Writing seeks to nurture talent in mystery fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting. Membership in Mystery Writers of America is not required to apply. The scholarships will be awarded in the summer/fall.

Award Amount: Up to $500 annually, non-renewable. The scholarship may be used to offset tuition and fees for U.S. workshops, seminars, or university/college-level writing courses.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Applications will be available online on the Mystery Writers of America website by clicking on the 'Awards & Programs' link. In addition to a completed application, the student must also submit the following: a copy of the official description of the writing workshop, seminar, or course he/she wishes to take (printed by the institution/sponsor of the program); one copy of a mystery writing sample (e.g., three chapters and a synopsis, three short stories, three pieces of nonfiction work, one play script, or one screenplay); and a 300- to 500-word essay that explains his/her interest in mystery writing. The scholarship committee may elect to require a syllabus or other documentation to be submitted for the program or course the applicant plans to attend. The application and all supplemental materials must be mailed to the address provided. Emailed applications are not accepted; the email address listed should be used for inquiries only.
