Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have received the Eagle Scout Award.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be a registered, active member of a Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Scout Team, or Venturing Crew chartered to an American Legion Post, Auxiliary Unit or Sons of The American Legion Squadron OR be a registered, active member of a duly chartered Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Scout Team, or Venturing Crew, and the son or grandson of a Legionnaire or Auxiliary member.
  5. Must be a high school student at time of scholarship selection.
  6. Must be 15 years of age or older. Please note: Eagle Scouts still in high school who reached their 18th birthday during the nomination year remain eligible if otherwise qualified.
  7. Must be an active member of his religious institution and have received the appropriate Boy Scout religious emblem. The student must also have demonstrated practical citizenship in church, school, Scouting, and community.
  8. Must be male.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. high school students who are 15 years or older and have been awarded the Eagle Scout Award are eligible for this award. Students must be a registered, active member of a Boy Scout Troop or related group.

Additional Information: Each recipient will be eligible to receive his scholarship immediately upon graduation from a state-accredited high school (public, parochial, military, private, or home school), and he must utilize the total award within four years of his graduation date, excluding active military duty. A scout who is still in high school and has reached his 18th birthday during the nomination year will remain eligible if otherwise qualified. The Scout who best meets the qualifications outlined in the nomination application will be selected as the American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year by the National Americanism Commission.The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will join the youth champion delegation and participate in the 98th Annual National Convention in Minneapolis, MN Aug. 24-28, 2018.

Award Amount: Scholarships will be awarded as follows: $10,000 to the Eagle Scout of the Year; and $2,500 to each of the three runners-up. Disbursement from the scholarship fund will be made jointly to the student and the school at the beginning of each semester or quarter. However, only one request will be honored per semester or quarter.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $17,500.

Applications are available on the American Legion website. In addition to the completed application, each applicant must submit the following materials: an official transcript; a one-page listing of his activities participated in during high school and awards, honors, and recognitions received; two pages in which he describes his Eagle Scout Project; two pages detailing his scouting record; a one-page description of his community participation record; a one-page listing of his religious involvement; a one-page description of his career interests and/or goals; and one letter of recommendation each from his religious institution, school, community and Scouting (two additional letters may be included). The nomination/application forms must be received by the applicant's corresponding department (state) headquarters by March 1. Applications should not be sent directly to the National Headquarters. A listing of department headquarters is available on the application. The application judged best in department will then be forwarded by the state department to National Headquarters at the address provided and received by April 1.
