Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies annually depending on the number of qualified applicants and the rate of return on the endowment fund that provides scholarships.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a high school junior at the time of application.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  3. Must have a parent, grandparent, or legally recognized guardian who served as an active member of the U.S. military during a time of war or conflict.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.
  5. Must be a member of the American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for high school juniors who are the child, grandchild, or legally recognized dependent of a U.S. military member who has served honorably during a time of war or conflict.

Award Amount: Scholarships are awarded in the amounts of $1,000 and $20,000. All awards are provided annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Applications can be found on the American Legion Auxiliary website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must submit: four letters of recommendation (one letter from either the principal or guidance counselor of the school from which the applicant will graduate, including the size of class and the student's position in the class, and the student's cumulative grade point average; one letter from a clergyman/clergywoman of the applicant's choice; and two letters from adult citizens, other than relatives, attesting to the applicant's character in regard to conduct, citizenship, and leadership); original essay responses to the prompts listed on the application; a certified transcript or photocopy of the applicant's high school grades; a copy of ACT or SAT test scores; and a brief statement of the military service of parent or parents, including the branch of service and dates of service, or a photocopy of parent's or parents' discharge papers. Students must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Applicants must submit the completed application online and no later than the deadline date.
