Additional Information: Since 1990, the Bobby Griffith Memorial Scholarships have been awarded to Contra Costa County high school graduates who contribute to the community by improving the environment for LGBTQ youth. The award is provided annually in honor of Bobby Griffith, a gay youth from Walnut Creek, California, who committed suicide in 1983 after his family, friends, and community would not accept his sexual orientation. After his death, his mother, Mary Griffith, along with the rest of Bobby’s family, came to better and accept the pressures and injustices her son was forced to endure. She became an advocate for LGBTQ youth by joining PFLAG and working to provide educational opportunity for those LGBTQ students and allies who may not receive support elsewhere.
