Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies from year to year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have a demonstrable record of community and school involvement that reveals exceptional leadership potential.
  2. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  3. The student must demonstrate academic achievement.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be a graduating high school senior and/or first time undergraduate student enrolling at a four-year college or university.

Additional Information: Herbert Lehman Scholarships were initially awarded to help African-American students attend formerly segregated four-year colleges and universities in the South and to increase the number of African-Americans in the legal profession. Today, the Lehman Scholarships are awarded to students of outstanding character who are entering college for the first time and who will be attending an accredited four-year college or university as a full-time undergraduate student. Lehman Scholarship candidates must be of excellent character and be able to present strong academic records, test scores, and personal essays. A candidate must have a demonstrable record of community and school involvement that reveals exceptional leadership potential with a capacity to work well in diverse settings. Moreover, he or she must provide strong recommendations from teachers, community representatives, or employers.

Award Amount: Awards are provided up to $2,000 annually and may be renewable for up to an additional three years provided that scholars remain in good academic standing.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.

Applications are available online from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund website. In addition to the online application, the student must submit two essays of 500 words on the topics listed, three recommendation letters, a photocoy of FAFSA form, official transcripts, and ACT/SAT scores. All applications and supporting documents must be received online by the deadline date.
