Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered annually is at the discretion of the DCF Board of Directors.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be a graduating high school senior.
  4. Must be a resident of Delaware.
  5. Must be graduating from a Sussex County high school.
  6. Must plan to attend an accredited Delaware institution.
  7. Must enroll as a full-time undergraduate student in the fall of the year in which the scholarships are awarded.
  8. Must be active in community service.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors from Sussex County (DE) high schools who plan to attend an accredited Delaware institution. Students must have a low to moderate income and be active in community service.

Application requirements for the J.D. O’Connor Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Test scores
  • Tax return
  • FAFSA
  • Essays (2)
  • Recommendation letter
Additional Information: To ensure complete impartiality in selection of recipients and to maintain a high level of professionalism, DCF programs are administered by AcademicWorks, a firm that specializes in managing sponsored scholarship programs. All students must have a low to moderate income. An independent selection committee will evaluate the applications and select the recipients considering: extracurricular activities; community involvement; essay content; academic achievements and records; financial need. Decisions of the selection committees are final and are not subject to appeal. No application feedback will be given. Notifications are sent to recipients and applicants not selected to receive an award via email by the end of June.

Award Amount: $1,000 awarded (given in semi-annual payments of $500). A recipient may reapply for future funding as long as he/she is maintaining a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, is enrolled full time, and is in good standing. Applicants may receive a total of four annual awards.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.
