Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to pursue a career in law.
  3. Must have an interest in securing the civil rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
  4. Must be a law student eligible to graduate in spring, OR a recent graduate of law school (within three years of graduating from law school).

Description: This fellowship is provided annually to fund a new lawyer to work in the United States on an innovative, public interest law project that serves the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community.

Additional Information: Factors considered in awarding the grant include: the need for the project/service in community; the anticipated impact of the project; the organization and structure of the proposal; the stability and supportiveness of the sponsoring organization or attorney; the applicant's past community or public service activities; and the applicant's connection and involvement with the LGBT community. Each finalist will be given the opportunity for a personal interview before the Steel Fellowship Review Committee in San Francisco in April or May. If because of distance, timing or expense, an interview in the Bay Area is not feasible, finalists may schedule a telephone or videoconference interview with the committee. Pride Law Fund does not reimburse finalists for interview expenses. The announcement of the current year's recipient can be expected on or about May 31. If awarded a Steel Fellowship, the applicant must fulfill the following duties: commit to his/her project full time and finish it within 12 months; inform the Pride Law Fund of any additional funding/income; maintain contact with the Pride Law Fund; mention the Steel Fellowship in any publications or other written materials; draft a short summary describing the project which may be used in Pride Law Fund mailings and/or press releases; and, if not already admitted to the bar, complete the requirements for bar admission.

Award Amount: Up to $30,000 annually, non-renewable. The award amount may vary depending on the availability of funds.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $30,000.

Application information is available on the Pride Law Fund website. To be considered for the fellowship, the student must be planning an innovative, public interest law project that serves the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The Pride Law Fund seeks to fund 'cutting-edge' projects that have the potential to make a lasting impact. The student's application must not exceed 10 double-spaced pages, and must consist of the following: a cover/title page, a one-page overview of the project, a full description of the project; a description of the student's qualifications; a budget; and supporting materials, including a signed 'Usage Agreement and Certificate'. Full descriptions of all required materials, including the 'Usage Agreement and Certificate' form, are available on the Pride Law Fund website. The student is strongly encouraged to review these guidelines carefully to ensure that his/her application meets the fund's standards. Completed applications must be submitted by email and received no later than the deadline date.
