Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered annually may vary based on the number of qualified applicants and the amount of funding available.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen as defined by the U.S. Department of Education.
  3. Must be a resident of Alabama for at least 12 months prior to the beginning of the academic term.
  4. Must be enrolled full-time or part-time.
  5. Must not be enrolled in a course of study leading to a degree in theology, religion, or other field of preparation for a religious profession.
  6. Must be enrolled in an eligible undergraduate degree program.
  7. Must display substantial financial need.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: ASAP is a need-based, state/federal grant ranging from $300 to $5,000 per academic year. Eligible students are undergraduate students who are Alabama residents attending eligible Alabama institutions. Nearly 80 Alabama institutions participate in the program. To apply please submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal government. This form should be filed beginning October 1 each year and is available on the FAFSA website or the financial aid office at the institution you plan to attend.

Additional Information: For the purposes of this award, an applicant's financial need is the difference between his/her available financial resources and his/her anticipated educational cost, including tuition and fees applicable to such student together with the institution's estimate of other expenses reasonably related to cost of attendance at such institution, including, but not limited to, the cost of room and board, transportation costs, and costs for books and supplies. Awards will be disbursed in the following priority order: 1) students with exceptional financial need, i.e., those with the lowest Expected Family Contributions (EFCs) who will also receive Pell Grants; 2) students with low EFCs who will not receive Pell Grants. Awards will be made in order of lowest EFC to highest until funding is depleted. Additional information about this program is available from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE) website and from the financial aid offices at participating independent, non-profit, postsecondary institutions in Alabama.

Award Amount: Award amounts range from $300 to $5,000 per academic year and are based on the amount of financial need. Awards are not automatically renewable. Students may re-apply each year by completing the FAFSA.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Additional information about this program is available from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE) website. Students must make application through the financial aid office at postsecondary institutions in Alabama. To apply, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The FAFSA should be completed as soon as possible after January 1 for award consideration for the upcoming award year. The deadline to apply varies. Each participating college may require students to submit additional forms and processes before eligibility can be determined. Students are strongly encouraged to contact their institution’s Scholarship or Financial Aid office for additional details and instructions.
