Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Detroit, Michigan.
  3. Must be an undergraduate student at the time of application.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  5. Must be majoring in and planning to pursue a career in welding.

Additional Information: The Amos and Marilyn Winsand-Detroit Section Named Scholarship has been established, and is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Winsand and the AWS Detroit Section. Mr. Winsand is an AWS Foundation Trustee and former AWS Treasurer. The recipient must be enrolled in a two or four-year program, and be a resident of Michigan or attend a Michigan college. The Scholarship is for an Associate or Bachelors degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, or a related field, and the funds are for tuition, books, and/or lab fees.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in December for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available online on the American Welding Society (AWS) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit the following: two letters of reference with one letter of reference indicating previous hands-on welding experience; a personal statement; original official transcript(s) sent directly from the college or university (if applying for more than one scholarship, only one transcript must be an original official transcript); verification of enrollment; an essay as specified on the application; and a statement of unmet financial need. Students must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
