Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies annually. Last year, 14 scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must receive a high school diploma by June or a GED by the time the application is submitted.
  4. Must be a resident of the Triangle Area of North Carolina (Durham, Orange, and Wake counties).
  5. Must plan to attend a postsecondary educational or technical institution in North Carolina.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. high school seniors who are residents of Durham, Orange, or Wake counties in North Carolina and plan to attend a North Carolina postsecondary institution. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and must submit ACT and/or SAT scores; financial need will be considered.

  • Recommendation letters (2)
  • Essay
  • Interview (if requested)
  • Proof of perm. res. (if applic.)
  • ACT/SAT scores
Additional Information: The scholarship is based on financial need. The Scholarship Committee may personally interview applicants before the scholarship award decisions are made. The selected applicants will be notified during the first week of May. Please note: Students must submit a postsecondary school student ID number or Social Security number by May 15, so funds can be released to the school of choice.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $7,500 annually, non-renewable. Previous recipients may reapply.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $14,000.

Applications are available on the Assistance League of the Triangle Area website. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: SAT and/or ACT scores; his/her high school transcript verifying grade point average and class rank through the first semester of the senior year; proof of permanent residency if he/she is not a U.S. citizen; a complete copy of his/her FAFSA/SAR showing income and number of dependents; two letters of reference, one from a teacher in his/her high school and one from someone outside his/her family who knows him/her personally; and an essay of 300 to 500 words on one of the topics listed on the application. Please note: The essay must be written without notes and must be written in the presence of a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal. Applications must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
