Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must be of Portuguese descent and be actively involved in the Portuguese-American community. The student must also have taken or plan to enroll in a Portuguese language course.
  4. Must be a California resident.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  6. Must be a current college sophomore, junior, or senior attending a four-year college or university.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Current college sophomores, juniors, and seniors attending a four-year college or university who are California residents and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible for this award. Students must be of Portuguese descent and interested or involved in the Portuguese-American community. Students must also have taken or plan to enroll in a Portuguese language course.

Application requirements for the Herbert Fernandes Scholarship – Category C-20 are:

  • Photo
Additional Information: The candidate will be selected by the LAEF Scholarship Committee.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available by clicking on the 'LAEF College Grant (Non-Member) Herbert Fernandes' link. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: an official college transcript; letters of recommendation to be submitted directly from three individuals who can speak to his/her character and/or financial needs; and a recent wallet-size photo (no copies). All application materials must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
