In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  2. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  3. Must be a resident of Dutchess County, New York.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Description: This award is available for high school seniors and current undergraduate students who are graduating or have recently graduated from a high school in Dutchess County, New York.

Application requirements for the Joseph H. and Mildred C. McManus Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Joseph H. McManus was born in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York in 1900 and attended Poughkeepsie High School.  Mr. McManus lived in the Poughkeepsie area his entire lifetime until his death in 1988.  His wife, Mildred Conklin, was born in Ulster County in 1902 and married Joseph McManus in 1940.  Mrs. McManus died in 1985. Mr. and Mrs. McManus always loved young people and education, so it was their wish to establish a Trust for the students of promise in their beloved Dutchess County.  In their honor, this award is provided annually to a student who demonstrates financial need and academic potential.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $3,000 annually, renewable for up to an additional three years if the student maintains a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.

Applications are available online from the Community Foundation of Dutchess County website at the address provided. In addition to the completed application, each applicant must submit two letters of recommendation (one academic and one personal); a copy of his/her most recent transcript; a copy of the student's Student Aid Report (SAR) and Expected Family Contribution (EFC) information; and an essay of approximately 500 words responding to the prompt listed on the application. The Student Aid Report (SAR) is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Applications must be completed online by the deadline date.
