Number of Awards & Eligibility: Eight awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must reside in the county of Maui (including Lana'i and Moloka'i) in Hawaii.
  3. Must plan to attend a four-year college or university in Hawai'i.
  4. Must plan to enroll as a full-time student (12 credits per semester).
  5. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school seniors in the county of Maui (including Lana'i and Moloka'i) in Hawaii. Students must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher and plan to attend a four-year college or university in the Hawaii.

Additional Information: The K.M. Hatano Scholarship Fund was created in 1987 through the generosity of Mr. Yasuji Hatano, President of Kokusai Motorcars Company of Japan. The scholarship was established to recognize men and women from Maui, Lana'i and Moloka'i who have excelled academically and have shown leadership and community involvement. All applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: $1,500 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $12,000.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the Hawai'i Community Foundation's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed at the provider's website; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. The application must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
