Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to major in education.
  3. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  4. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester).
  5. Must be a senior from one of the following public Windward O'ahu high schools: Castle, Kahuku, Kailua, Kalaheo or Olomana.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  8. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii high school seniors who are attending a public Windward O'ahu high school. Students must plan to major in education and have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Additional Information: This scholarship was established by former students of Ron Bright who wanted to honor his contributions to the field of teaching. This scholarship hopes to encourage those students pursuing careers in education who also want to make a difference in people's lives as Ron Bright has done. Preference is given to students with extracurricular activities in the performing arts. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the provider's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed online; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript (for this scholarship, the transcript must include grades from the first semester of his/her senior year); and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. The application must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
