Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, there were 3,637 awards offered for this program and the MG James Ursano Scholarship Program.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be pursuing his/her first undergraduate degree. This scholarship cannot be used for second undergraduate nor graduate degrees.
  4. Must be registered in DEERS (Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System).
  5. Must be the spouse of an active duty or retired soldier OR the widow(er) of a soldier who died while on active duty or while retired.
  6. Must be enrolled, accepted, or pending acceptance as a part-time or full-time student in a postsecondary or vocational institution approved and accredited by the U.S. Department of Education.
  7. Must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Description: This scholarship is open to spouses of active duty or retired Army soldiers and widow(er)s of soldiers who died on active duty or in retired status to pursue their first undergraduate degree. Students must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher; scholarships are based on financial need.

Additional Information: This program offers scholarships based solely on financial need as evidenced by information submitted on the FAFSA. It is not an entitlement nor is it automatically approved. Student must not be active duty or in a reserve component or a retiree of the National Guard, Reserves, or other military branch. Students may not already be fully funded by other sources. Any SEAP Scholarship recipient who also receives funding from other sources (i.e. GI Bill, scholarships, My CAA, VA benefits, etc.) may not be eligible to receive their full scholarship from AER. No student can receive funding above the school's established Cost of Attendance for tuition, fees, books and supplies. Once all costs are covered, any remaining funds must be returned to AER. The Financial Aid Office at each school will determine the recipient's final eligibility based on the complete financial aid package. Scholarship notifications are sent out in June.

Award Amount: The award amount varies annually. The award is non-renewable; students must reapply each year. Scholarships will be awarded for up to four academic years for full-time students or eight academic years for part-time students. Award amounts are based on enrollment and may be adjusted if enrollment status changes. The scholarship funds are mailed directly to the school prior to each fall and spring semester or each fall, winter, and spring term. The scholarship is not available for summer courses. Funds are to assist with tuition, fees, books and supplies.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,200.

Applications will be available on the Army Emergency Relief (AER) website after Jan. 2. The following documents must be uploaded to the online application: the student's DD214, if he/she has prior military service; the soldier sponsor's most recent Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), if the soldier is on active duty; transcripts showing all college coursework completed through the previous fall semester and cumulative grade point average, or a document stating that the student has not been enrolled in college previously (must be in an uneditable format, such as .pdf); a copy of the student's SAR (Student Aid Report), which is provided to him/her after filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid); the soldier sponsor's federal Title 10 orders, if applicable; and the soldier sponsor's casualty report, if applicable. The application must be completed and all supporting documents must be uploaded by 3:00 p.m. EDT on the deadline date.
