Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Waialua or Hale'iwa, HI.
  3. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester).
  4. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school seniors who are residents of Waialua or Hale'iwa, HI. Students must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.

Additional Information: Thomas "Uncle Tommy" Lee worked for the Dole Food Co. and Castle & Cooke, Inc. for 47 years from 1939 to 1986. After his retirement, he continued to work as a consultant and lobbyist. Active in numerous community and civic organizations and well respected for his political acumen, he was once voted one of the most effective lobbyists by members of the legislature. His co-workers, family and friends established this scholarship fund to carry on his legacy of caring. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation (HCF) website. The student should visit the HCF website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed at the provider's website; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Two letters of recommendation must also be submitted for this scholarship. These letters should be written by a teacher, counselor, minister, and/or employer who can comment on the applicant's overall character, achievement, and promise. The letters must be current, contain the applicant's full name, and be signed by the recommender. A student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. The application must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
