Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to 10 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont (Caledonia, Essex, or Orleans counties).
  3. Must be among the first generation in his/her family to attend college OR face significant barriers that limit his/her access to a postsecondary education.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  5. Must demonstrate academic achievement by having a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  6. Must demonstrate school/community involvement.
  7. Must be a high school senior who will earn a diploma or GED by the start of the upcoming school year.

Description: This scholarship is available for Vermont high school seniors who reside in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont (Caledonia, Essex, or Orleans counties), and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Students must be among the first generation in their family to attend postsecondary school or face significant barriers that limit their access to a postsecondary education; students must also demonstrate financial need and school/community involvement.

Additional Information: This scholarship is sponsored by the Freeman Foundation. Applicants must attend an accredited postsecondary school approved for federal Title IV funding and demonstrate financial need. Selection is based on application documents, academic achievement, and financial need.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available from the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) website. Applications may be completed either online or in paper form beginning on November 1. Please note: The student is only required to submit one application for all scholarships for which he/she wishes to apply. In addition, if a particular document is required for more than one scholarship, the student need only submit one copy of that document. To apply, the student must complete and submit the VSAC Unified Scholarship Application and submit the following materials: a letter of recommendation; an essay; and official transcripts. NOTE: Required additional materials MUST conform to the detailed instructions in the VSAC Scholarships Booklet. The student is highly encouraged to review the booklet thoroughly when assembling materials. Electronic applications and any digital versions of supplemental materials must be submitted by midnight on the deadline date. Paper applications or any supplemental materials in paper form must be postmarked by the deadline date.
