Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must reside in one of the following counties of east Tennessee: Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Cumberland, Fentress, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox (TN), Loudon, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Pickett, Roane, Scott, Sevier, or Union County.
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  5. Must be an active member of a local Boy Scouts troop.
  6. Must plan to enroll full-time at an accredited college or university in the fall semester following application.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Description: This scholarship is provided annually to low-income high school seniors who are members of the Boy Scouts of America, Great Smoky Mountain Council. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and plan to enroll in an accredited undergraduate program.

Additional Information: The Lawrence Strader Boy Scouts of America Scholarship was founded in 2010 to assist low-income Boyscouts in eastern Tennessee. Applicants must have a minimum of three years participation as a Boy Scout or be an Eagle Scout who was a registered member of Boy Scouts of America, Great Smoky Mountain Council for at least three years. Preference will be given to applicants planning to attend school in Tennessee and work in the East Tennessee area following graduation. Factors to be considered by the selection committee will be: financial need; general aptitude for advanced educational work; evidence of participation in and service to the community; and the maturity and professionalism of the student, in that order of importance. The selection committee reserves the right to conduct brief interviews with finalists.

Award Amount: $4,000 annually, renewable for up to an additional three years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $16,000.

Applications are available on the East Tennessee Foundation website. Prior to starting the application, students must obtain a copy of the East Tennessee Foundation scholarship guide and application instructions. The guide can be obtained online from the East Tennessee Foundation website. Students must review this guide in order to determine if additional supplementary materials may be required in order to complete the application. Applications must be completed online no later than the deadline date.
