Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S citizen.
  2. Must be a high school graduate or have earned a GED. The student must be matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.
  3. Must pursue a program of study which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security and/or challenges of global society, including: sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.

Description: This award is available to U.S high school graduates and undergraduate students who are planning to pursue a study abroad program. Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security.

Additional Information: Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Preference is also given to students who will study abroad for longer periods of time, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government. Students must be applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Study abroad proposals for two or more semesters are strongly encouraged. Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants proposing a full-year academic study. Boren-funded programs can begin no earlier than June 1. Summer-only programs must be eight weeks or more and are limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students. All applicants are notified of their status by mail in early May, and Boren Scholarship recipients are mailed award packets. Boren Scholarship recipients will be invited to attend an Orientation and Convocation in Washington, D.C. In exchange for scholarship funding, all Boren Scholars must agree to the NSEP Service Requirement. The NSEP Service Requirement stipulates that an award recipient work in the federal government in a position with national security responsibilities. Award Amount: Boren Scholarship awards are designed to pay for the majority of expenses that a typical undergraduate student will have while studying abroad. The funding/award period must be for consecutive time overseas. Award amounts are based on the amount of financial need up to the maximum award amount for each term.Maximum award amounts for the Boren Scholarship are: $8,000 for a summer program; $10,000 for a semester program; $20,000 for a year-long program.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.
