Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of North America.
  3. Must be a high school junior or senior at the time of application.
  4. Must consider oneself to be a free-thinker/non-religious.

Description: This writing contest is available to U.S. high school juniors and seniors who consider themselves to be free-thinkers/non-religious.

Application requirements for the FFRF William J. Schultz Essay Contest for High School Students are:

  • Essay
  • Biography (one paragraph)
Additional Information: Winners will be asked to provide a photograph suitable for publication. By entering the contest, winning students agree to have their essays printed in full or in part in 'Freethought Today,' the foundation's newspaper, and later posted online on the foundation's website. Eligible entrants will be offered a complimentary freethought book.

Award Amount: Up to $3,500 offered  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $15,450.
