Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three scholarship awards will be given in each category of High School Senior-Video and High School Senior-Essay. Up to 31 additional scholarship awards will be given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a high school senior.
  4. Must be currently attending a high school in the state of Michigan OR be currently attending a high school as a senior anywhere in the United States provided he/she was a Michigan First Credit Union member in good standing prior to Jan. 6, 2016.
  5. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher.
  6. Must intend to be a full-time student (12 or more credit hours) at a college or university for the fall semester.

Description: This scholarship competition is open to high school seniors who attend high school in Michigan or are Michigan First Credit Union members attending high school anywhere in the U.S. Students must have a grade point average of 2.8 or higher, and submit a video or essay.

Additional Information: All applicants must be members of Michigan First Credit Union. If the applicant is not a member, he/she may find information on joining at www.youngfreemichigan.com/join. Public voting on entries takes place from 12:00 p.m. on Feb. 5, to 3:00 p.m. on Feb. 15. The top ten scholarship candidates in each category will be determined by public voting. These candidates will move forward for review by the Judging Committee to determine the three scholarship winners in each category. The final judging for the scholarships will be based upon the merit of the submissions. Judging takes place from Feb. 16 to Feb. 26. Winners will be notified on or around Feb. 29. Previous Young & Free Michigan Scholarship Competition winners are not eligible to apply. One exception to this rule is when a high school category winner enters college; he/she becomes eligible for the college category only. Current paid employees (with the exception of Michigan First Credit Union Student Branch employees), retirees and representatives of Michigan First Credit Union and their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, related companies, agents, associates, dealers, representatives, advertising and promotional agencies – and their immediate family members (including spouse, children, step-children, parents, step-parents, in-law parents, brothers and sisters) – are not eligible to enter or win a scholarship, however they are eligible to vote during the public vote period.

Award Amount: Scholarships will be awarded as follows: first place in each category, $5,000; second place in each category, $4,000; third place in each category, $3,000; additional awards, $1,000 each. All awards are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,811.

Applications are available online on the Michigan First Credit Union website. To enter the scholarship competition, each student must create a video or essay addressing the topic: "What invention do you think the world would be better off without and why?". Detailed information on the topic is available on the scholarship website. Videos must be 60 seconds or less and uploaded to YouTube. Essays must be 500 words or less and uploaded to the application. Each student must also upload his/her most recent report card (including his/her name, school's name, and grade point average) and a photo of himself/herself. Applications must be submitted by 3:00 p.m. on the deadline date.
