In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be pursuing postsecondary education/training.
  4. Must be a resident of Rhode Island.
  5. Must have a significant disability.

Description: This scholarship is open to Rhode Island students who are pursuing postsecondary education and have a significant disability. Preference is based on merit, economic need, and educational goals.

Application requirements for the Catherine T. Murray Memorial Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Essay
Additional Information: Preference is based on merit, economic need and educational goals. Applicants will be screened by the Scholarship Advisory Committee. Applications will be scored as follows: accurate completion of all sections, 5 points; activities, 5 points; economic need, 5 points; career goal essay, 15 points. The Scholarship Advisory Committee will make a decision after they meet in mid-April, and applicants will be notified of their decision by email. OSCIL Board, staff and their families are excluded from consideration for this scholarship.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Funds may be used for enrollment in an academic, trade, or vocational program, or the attainment of assistive/adaptive equipment or device to access such educational opportunity.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online on the Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) website. Applications must be printed or typed. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: an explanation of how he/she has overcome his/her disability; and a one-page typed, double-spaced essay describing his/her realistic career goals and plans (should be specific). Applications may be mailed, emailed, or faxed using the contact information provided. Applications must be postmarked by the deadline date.
