Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund (SALEF)

Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In past years, 54 scholarships have been awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  3. Must have a history of community involvement.
  4. Must reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles Area (specifically South Central Los Angeles, Pico Union, East Los Angeles), or San Fernando Valley.
  5. Must be studying in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles Area (specifically South Central Los Angeles, Pico Union, East Los Angeles), or San Fernando Valley.
  6. Must be of Central American and/or other Latino ethnicity.
  7. Must be a graduating high school senior or current undergraduate or graduate student.
  8. Must plan to enroll full time in the upcoming academic school year.

Description: This scholarship is available to Central American/Latino students who are residents of and studying in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Los Angeles area, or San Fernando Valley. Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, demonstrate financial need, have a history of community involvement, and be willing to serve as a mentor if selected for a scholarship.

Application requirements for the Fulfilling Our Dreams Scholarship Program are:

Additional Information: This scholarship is open to all qualifying students regardless of their immigration status. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be willing to give back to the community by completing the equivalent of 52 community service hours assigned by SALEF through becoming a mentor to a high school and junior high school student and completing a community project assigned by SALEF or a combination of both. Applicants must be willing to join SALEF Chapters/Clubs at their respective institution/campus. Please note: Former scholarship recipients are ineligible to apply again.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications are available on the Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund (SALEF) website by clicking on the "Programs" tab. In addition to the completed application, the applicant must submit the following materials: two letters of recommendation on official letterhead addressing the topics listed on the application; a personal statement of no more than 1,000 words describing the topics listed on the application; a resume; official transcripts (must have a school seal and/or authorized signature); a copy of his/her and his/her parents' federal tax return or proof of family income (if not applicable, a written statement with explanation must be included); a copy of his/her federal financial aid award letter; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report) as generated by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The applicant must send the completed application and supporting materials in one package to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline.
