In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must attend an approved postsecondary institution in Illinois.
  4. Must be the child or spouse of a police, fire, or correctional officer who was killed or at least 90 percent permanently disabled in the line of duty. The police or fire officer must have been an employee (or volunteer) of an Illinois police or fire department. The correctional officer must have been employed in a security position by the Illinois Department of Corrections.
  5. Must be a high school senior or older.
  6. Must be enrolled on at least a half-time basis.

Description: This award is for students who are residents of Illinois and plan to attend a postsecondary institution in Illinois. The student must be the child or spouse of an Illinois police, fire, or correctional officer who was killed or at least 90 percent permanently disabled in the line of duty.

Additional Information: This grant is funded by the state of Illinois to provide assistance to a spouse or child of an Illinois police, correctional officers, or firefighters killed or at least 90 percent disabled in the line of duty. The grant help pays for the cost of tuition and mandatory fees at an ISAC-approved Illinois postsecondary institution. A list of approved institutions can be found at the ISAC website. Payments are made directly to the institution at which the student is enrolled. Grant payment is subject to the limits of dollars appropriated for this program by the Illinois General Assembly. In the event funds are insufficient to make awards to all eligible applicants, ISAC will make award determinations on the basis of the dates that the completed applications were received. Students must not be in default on any student loan nor owe a refund on any state or federal grant. Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress as established by the college or university.

Award Amount: This grant provides assistance toward tuition and mandatory fees for undergraduate or graduate study at ISAC-approved Illinois colleges. Awards can be used for a maximum of the equivalent of four academic years of full-time enrollment. Recipients must re-apply each year. Students should contact the financial aid office at his/her college to determine what portion of the total tuition and fees will be covered by this award.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,161.

Applications are available from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) website, at participating high school guidance offices, and from college financial aid offices at participating institutions. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit a certified death certificate or a certified statement from a licensed physician that the applicant's spouse or parent/legal guardian was killed or became at least 90 percent disabled in the line of duty. Completed applications must be submitted on or before the applicable deadline date. To receive full-year consideration, applications must be received on or before October 1 of the academic year. For spring- and summer-term consideration, the deadline date is March 1. For summer-term consideration only, applications must be received on or before June 15. Applications received by ISAC after these deadline dates will be processed only for subsequent terms, with June 15 as the final date of acceptance for the summer term.
