California Adolescent Nutrition and Fitness (CANFit)

Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent upon the amount of funding available. Last year, four awards were given in the entire CANFit scholarship program (undergraduate, graduate, and culinary arts scholarships).
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must attend an accredited college or university in California.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must be a member of one of the following minority groups: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian/Pacific Islander, or Latino/Hispanic.
  5. Must have completed 12 to 15 units of graduate course work at the time of application.
  6. Must be enrolled in an approved master's level or doctoral graduate program in nutrition, public health nutrition, physical education, or an American Dietetic Association-approved pre-professional practice program.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for minority students currently enrolled in a graduate program for nutrition, public health nutrition, physical education, or an American Dietetic Association-approved pre-professional practice program at an accredited California college or university. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and have completed 12 to 15 units of graduate course work at the time of application.

Application requirements for the CANFit Graduate Scholarship are:

Additional Information: Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Applicants will be notified of award status by June.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $2,000 annually, non-renewable. Checks will be mailed to the recipient's educational institution, and must be used toward tuition and fees.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Application information and all required forms are available on the California Adolescent Nutrition and Fitness Program (CANFit) website. To complete the application process, the student must submit the following: a completed and signed 'Application Cover Sheet'; a completed and signed 'Statement of Financial Status'; two letters of recommendation from professors, employers, community leaders, etc. (submitted on the form provided); a typed one- to two-page letter describing his/her academic goals and involvement in community nutrition and/or physical education activities; a 500- to 1,000-word essay addressing the topic listed on the 'Application Instructions' document; a photograph of himself/herself (billfold size or larger); and official transcripts showing at least 12-15 units of work completed. The completed original application and three additional copies of each document (except transcript and photo) must be submitted by the deadline date and sent to the address provided.
