Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 190 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must plan to major in a health-related field in a school in the United States (not including sports medicine, non-clinical psychology, or social work).
  4. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  5. Must plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate students; 9 credits per semester for graduate students).
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a college junior, senior or graduate student at time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for college juniors, seniors, and graduate students who are residents of Hawaii and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Students must plan to major in a health-related field (not including sports medicine, non-clinical psychology, or social work).

Additional Information: Dr. Hans Zimmerman established this foundation to provide financial assistance to individuals in Hawai'i wishing to pursue an education in a health field. During his long and productive career in Hawai'i, Dr. Zimmerman encouraged countless individuals to choose careers in medicine. At his death, additional assets came into the foundation so that it is now one of the largest scholarship funds in Hawai'i. All applicants for this award must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: Approximately $3,741 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $710,790.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the provider's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed at the provider's website; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
