Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must major in archaeology.
  3. Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada OR be enrolled in a graduate program at a North American college or university.
  4. Must be actively pursuing an advanced degree.

Description: Citizens or permanent residents of Canada or the U.S. or students pursuing advanced degress in archaeology in North America are eligible for this award.

Application requirements for the Harriet and Leon Pomerance Fellowship are:

  • Curriculum vitae/Resume
  • Research project proposal
Additional Information: This fellowship is intended to support an individual project of a scholarly nature, related to Aegean Bronze Age archaeology, and to be conducted between July 1 of the award year and the following June 30. Preference will be given to candidates whose project requires travel to the Mediterranean for the purpose stated above. The recipient must agree to: abide by the terms of the award; submit to the Chair of the AIA Fellowships Committee a report on the use of the fellowship stipend within 30 days of the end of his/her fellowship tenure; and submit an abstract to the AIA Program Committee to present work at the AIA Annual Meeting within two years of being awarded the fellowship. Previous Pomerance Fellows are also not eligible.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) website. Please note: The applicant must be a member of AIA to submit the application. The student may join prior to submitting the application. Membership information is available online at https://www.archaeological.org/membership/. As part of the online application, the student must provide or upload the following materials: names and contact information for three references; a current curriculum vitae or resume; and a project proposal that includes a proposal section, a bibliography section, an itinerary section, and a budget section. If the student has not yet received his/her doctorate, the student must mail a copy of his/her official graduate transcript to the address provided. All application materials (including transcripts and references) must be received by the deadline date.
