Number of Awards & Eligibility: Six to ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international students.
  2. Must be a British citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of the United Kingdom.
  4. Must plan to enroll full time.
  5. Must plan to attend the University of Pennsylvania.
  6. Must be qualified to pursue a graduate degree at time of application. Post-doctoral students are eligible if the subject to be studied is different from his/her current degree.

Additional Information: The Thouron-University of Pennsylvania Fund for British-American Student Exchange exists for the promotion of better understanding and closer friendship between the people of the United Kingdom and the United States of America. A full Thouron Award cannot be held in parallel with other awards, and any such awards must be declared to the Thouron Awards administration. No application will be considered from a candidate already in the United States, or from a candidate who has previously spent an academic year at the University of Pennsylvania. The Thouron Award is sufficiently generous to allow for vacation travel. Students are expected to explore parts of the United States during the summer and in other vacation periods.

Award Amount: The value of the award is adjusted annually. The current value is $31,500. The award is intended to cover the cost of travel, books and maintenance. The award may be renewed for one additional year at the discretion of the scholarship committee, and depending on the length of the course to which the awardee has been admitted.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $31,500.

Applications are available on the Thouron Award website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the Thouron Award application with a passport-sized color photograph; one copy of the equality and diversity monitoring form; three references on the provided forms; a personal statement of one page or less describing his/her academic /personal goals and objectives in relation to his/her proposed program of study and how the award would help in accomplishing these goals; and a copy of a curriculum vitae of no more than one page. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their chosen referees receive and submit the required reference report form by the deadline. Suggestions for appropriate referees might include the following: 1) university dean of faculty or master of college, 2) professor or head of department/school who can assess academic performance, 3) tutor/lecturer/class head or other person with personal knowledge of applicant's work, activities and other strengths, 4) supervisor/manager of any employment, paid or voluntary, permanent or temporary. In addition to the completed scholarship application, students must also apply for admission to the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). This is a separate process from the scholarship application, and the student must be aware of the deadlines and time scales for both. Information on the admission process is available online. Students should note that graduate admission at UPenn is decentralized, meaning the student must apply directly to his/her intended program department. All students are required to present GRE scores. All application materials must be received no later than 5 p.m. GMT on the deadline date.
