Number of Awards & Eligibility: Three awards offered annually. One award will be offered to an associate, bachelor and master degree candidate.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must be a Society of Manufacturing Engineer member in good standing in his/her SME Student Chapter.
  4. Must be attending Wayne State University in Detriot, MI; Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI; University of Detroit-Mercy in Detriot, MI; Focus: Hope, Center for Advanced Technologies in Detriot, MI; or Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, MI.
  5. Must be enrolled in a manufacturing engineering or manufacturing engineering technology program.
  6. Must be a part-time or full-time student.
  7. Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student at time of application.
  8. Must reside in and attend an accredited institution in the United States or Canada.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is offered to undergraduate and graduate students who are attending an eligible institution. The applicant must be majoring in manufacturing engineering and have a 3.0 grade point average or higher to be eligible.

Application requirements for the Chapter One – Detroit Founding Chapter Scholarship are:

  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
  • Personal statement
  • Official Transcript
  • Resume
Additional Information: Preference will be given to a member in good standing of their respective SME Student Chapter or SME-Detroit Chapter One - The Founding Chapter. Applicants must demonstrate good character and leadership. Need is not a consideration in awarding scholarships except when two or more applicants have equal qualifications. The scholarship review committee and other ad hoc review committees will evaluate applications during March of the award year. Their recommendations for the top candidates will be presented to the SME Education Foundation Board at their annual meeting in May. Each applicant will be notified of the final decision by the end of June.

Award Amount: The minimum award amount is $1,000, but the student may receive a higher amount if more funding is available. This award is non-renewable. The scholarship can be used only as a credit toward tuition, fees or books.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.
