Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to three awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be currently enrolled in a turfgrass science program or related field. Typically, this includes candidates for master's degrees or doctorates in appropriate fields of study.
  2. Must plan to pursue a career in research, instruction, or extension in a university setting.
  3. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  4. Must be in his/her second year of a recognized graduate program.

Description: International and U.S. students currently enrolled in their second year of a recognized graduate program of turfgrass science or a related field are eligible for this award. Students must plan to pursue a career in research, instruction, or extension service in a university setting.

Additional Information: The Watson Fellowships Selection Committee will evaluate each applicant on: academic excellence, peer recommendations, communications skills, commitment to a career as an instructor and/or scientist, accomplishments in research and education, and potential to contribute significantly to the industry. Financial need is not a consideration in the judging.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable. Past recipients are ineligible to apply.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available online on the Environmental Institute for Golf (EIG) website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit the following: answers to the five essay questions posed within the application (400-600 words each); a resume; a one-page summary of any research projects, educational efforts, extension programs or other relevant activity in which he/she has been involved; transcripts (unofficial accepted); one letter of recommendation from his/her graduate studies advisor; one letter of recommendation from another academic instructor; and one letter of recommendation from a superintendent with which he/she has had professional contact. Please note: Recommendation forms are available within the application. All materials must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
