Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be between 21 and 35 years of age.
  2. Must be majoring in journalism.
  3. Must be pursuing a graduate degree.

Description: Latin American applicants will have to undergo a TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The winners of the scholarships will be announced in April 2018 following the IAPA Midyear Meeting. All qualified participants will receive official notification from the IAPA of the result of the award of scholarships.

Application requirements for the Inter American Press Association Scholarship Program are:

Additional Information: The Inter American Press Association was established in 1942. Their goal is to defend and promote the right of the peoples of the Americas to be freely informed through an independent press. Established in 1954, the Scholarship Fund is for young American or Canadian journalists. It covers an academic year’s study in some Latin American or Caribbean country, and for young Latin American and Caribbean journalists to take courses in journalism at some recognized university in the United States or Canada during one academic year. The IAPA Scholarship Fund is supported only by contributions from IAPA member publications and private foundations.

Award Amount: The grant value is up to $20,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Applicants fill out a form and submit it electronically or by mail. The application package should include your scholarship application form. You also need to submit an autobiography of about 200 words. In addition, you must write an essay in your native language about your study plans (200 words or so). Include, three letters of recommendation, which can be in any language but need to be in sealed envelopes, and as such you should include them in the application package. If they prefer to e-mail the letters, they can do so to becas@sipiapa.org. You’ll also need your curriculum vitae, three clippings/printouts of your best published articles and copy of your TOEFL score and copy of your university transcripts and diploma.
