In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior and be planning to attend a college/university or trade school in the United States beginning in the fall.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.

Description: U.S. high school seniors with plans to enroll in college in the fall of 2016 are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Students must read an essay about automatic fire sprinklers and take an online test to apply.

Additional Information: This scholarship is not awarded based on financial need. A home-schooled student is eligible to apply as long as his/her course of study is equivalent to that of a senior in high school. Any attempt by a student to enter the contest under a different name, address, etc., in order to take the online test multiple times will automatically disqualify him/her without notification. Before scholarship funds will be awarded, all information submitted on the application by the student will be verified. If any false or misleading information is submitted on the application, the student will be disqualified without notification. Relatives of AFSA staff or board members may not apply. Winners will be notified for appropriate recognition to include award assemblies, graduation ceremonies and newspaper announcements. Due to the number of entries received, AFSA can only notify winners.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable. The scholarship is paid directly to the recipient's educational institution to be used for tuition and/or books and may be used over a period not to exceed four years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available online on the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) website, and will only be accepted online. Entries will be accepted from Sept. 1 to April 1. In order to enter the contest, all applicants must read the 'Fire Sprinkler Essay' about automatic fire sprinklers located on the AFSA website (the essay is approximately 3,000 words long). After reading the essay and filling out the online application form, the applicant must take a 10-question multiple choice test on the essay. The test is 'open book'; it is recommended that the student print out the essay so he/she can use it as a reference during the test. The student will be entered in the scholarship drawing once for each question answered correctly (the student may be entered up to a maximum of 10 times). The student will be given a chance at the end of the test to re-answer any questions he/she answered incorrectly. All applicants are allowed to take the online test only once. Students must provide all information requested to be able to submit their entries. The following information is requested on the application: full name; home street address; city, state, and zip code; home phone with area code; email address; birth date; parent/guardian name; parent/guardian contact number with area code; the student's high school name; high school city/state; and anticipated date of graduation. Entries must be submitted by noon CT on the deadline date.
