In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must submit a recorded jazz audition.
  2. Must reside in Pinellas County, Florida.
  3. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  5. This award is for U.S. students.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Description: This award is available for high school seniors in Pinellas County, Florida who are active in jazz music and plan to pursue a career or major in music.

Additional Information: The Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association is honored to reward students who work the hardest, show the greatest commitment, and are among the best & brightest of Tampa Bay's high school musicians. Each year, several students receive scholarship rewards to help them continue their education. Students are selected on the basis of an established record of excellence in practice of music (performance, composition, academics, strengths) and a strong commitment to pursuing additional education in music. The goal of the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz association has been, and continues to be, to provide the aspiring musician with an environment that helps them to achieve their professional goals.

Award Amount: $1,333 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,333.

Applications and information about this award are available online at the Pinellas Education Foundation website using the link provided. Students wishing to be considered for the Al Downing Jazz Education Scholarship must also submit a recorded sample of the student's performance demonstrating his/her ability to interpret jazz and improvise in a style reflecting exposure to the jazz idiom. Submissions must be less than twenty minutes of recorded performance. The recording may be on CD or cassette and must be labeled with the student’s: name, instrument, school, home address and listing of tunes performed on the recording. Students must perform 3 contrasting selections (one must be a blues performance) with live accompaniment. Selected tunes must be from the standard jazz repertoire. All performers (except drummers) are expected to play/sing the melody and to improvise. All applications must be mailed to the address provided, and must be received by the deadline date.
