Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be enrolled in high school, an accredited flight program, an accredited college or university, or otherwise pursuing an eligible certificate.
  4. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) if a current full-time high school or college student.
  5. Must be a member of Women in Aviation, International (WAI) by Nov. 1, and that membership must remain current through March. Please note: Both men and women are eligible to join WAI.
  6. Must be pursuing a private, recreational, or sport pilot certificate. Please note: The applicant must have obtained a student pilot certificate by the scholarship application deadline and provide a copy of the certificate.

Description: The AOPA Student Pilot Scholarship is open to U.S. students who are pursuing a private, recreational, or sport pilot certificate and already have a student pilot certificate. Additional Information: The recipient of the AOPA Student Pilot Scholarship will be chosen based on merit, including previous accomplishments, ability to set and achieve goals, involvement in general aviation, and commitment to completing flight training. All scholarships, unless otherwise noted, will be awarded at the Annual International Women in Aviation Conference. Attendance at the conference is not required to receive a scholarship, but it is encouraged. Please note: Students may only receive one scholarship per year.

Award Amount: $3,000 annually, non-renewable. Funds will be paid directly to the recipient and must be used within one year of the award.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications for the AOPA Student Pilot Scholarship are available on the Women in Aviation, International (WAI) website. A complete application packet must include three stapled sets of the following (one original and two copies): a completed application form; two recommendation letters of one page each; a 500-word typed, descriptive essay; a professional resume; and copies of all aviation licenses and medical certificates, and the last three pages of the applicant's pilot logbook, if applicable. For this scholarship, the applicant must also include a separate 300-word essay expressing his/her thoughts on general aviation's role in supporting the nation and local communities and a copy of his/her student pilot certificate. A separate application packet must be submitted for each scholarship for which the student wishes to apply. Students may apply for a maximum of two scholarships per year. Application packets must be sent to the address provided and be postmarked by the deadline date.
