Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must attend high school in Maine.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be enrolled full time as a high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall semester following graduation.
  5. Must demonstrate a critical financial need. $55,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; a written explanation must be provided if income is higher.
  6. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  7. This award is for U.S. students.

Additional Information: The Horatio Alger Maine Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the State of Maine who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education. The award is funded through the generosity of the Walter and Suzanne Scott Foundation and the Francis T. and Louise T. Nichols Foundation. The applicant must have a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution. The student may begin his/her studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution. The applicant must also plan to enter college no later than the fall following high school graduation. Each applicant must demonstrate involvement in co-curricular and community activities. Scholarship recipients will be announced in January.

Award Amount: The total value of this award is $10,000 paid out in installments annually. If the student receives this award he/she is guaranteed the funding for the full 5 years of his/her undergraduate program by maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. This award is non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Applications and information about this award are available on the Horatio Alger website at the address provided.In addition to the completed application form, the applicant must also provide a copy of the front page of his/her parent/guardian's individual federal tax return (1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ or 1099 SSA-Social Security Tax Form). If the student's parent/guardian's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is a negative number, the student should submit copies of his/her parent/guardian's federal individual tax return for the last three years. If the student's parent/guardians were not required to file a tax return, the student should include statement copies of any government benefits, such as food stamps or Public Assistance documents.Online applications and supporting materials must be submitted by the deadline.
