Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually: two for the Roe scholarship, two for the Humphrey award, and one for the Pilla award.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a union member or a dependent of a union member whose local union is affiliated with the Minnesota AFL-CIO.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  4. Must attend a postsecondary institution located within the state of Minnesota.
  5. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: The Minnesota AFL-CIO offers scholarships to union members and dependents of union members that are graduating seniors in high school. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The following named scholarships are given under this program: the David K. Roe Scholarship, the Hubert H. Humphrey Memorial Award, and the Donald Pilla Memorial Award. The first two scholarships are given to college/university students, and the last is given to a vocational/technical student. Winners will be selected by lot by the Minnesota AFL-CIO Education Committee.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications can be found at the Minnesota AFL-CIO website by contacting Lori Williams at the email address provided. On the application, the student must select whether or not he/she is applying for a college/university scholarship or a vocational/technical scholarship. A local union officer must verify the student's or his/her parent's union membership, and the student's high school principal or guidance counselor must verify his/her grade point average. The counselor must attach an official transcript of the students's high school record, including the first trimester/quarter of his/her senior year. Applications must be mailed to the address provided and postmarked no later than the deadline date.
