Number of Awards & Eligibility: 500 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to enroll as a full-time student (minimum of 12 semester hours).
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen. Please note: Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; resident alien status does not qualify.
  4. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: U.S. high school seniors who plan to enroll as full-time college freshmen are eligible for this award. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need; applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks to apply.

Additional Information: Applications must advance through local, district and state competitions to reach national judging. At each level of judging, the Elks National Foundation Scholarship Office will send email notifications to applicants informing them if they advanced in the contest or not. The first round of email notifications will be sent in mid-January, after Lodge judging is completed. District judging will be completed in late January, and State judging will be completed in mid-February. In late April, the 20 top finalists will participate in a Leadership Weekend in Chicago during which they will interview with the national judges. The Chicago office of the Elks National Foundation will announce the 500 national winners, and notify them in writing, by late April. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks to apply for this program. College students are not eligible to apply. Male and female students compete separately.

Award Amount: Awards are distributed as follows: two first-place awards of $50,000 each; two second-place awards of $40,000 each; two third-place awards of $30,000 each; fourteen third-place awards of $20,000 each; and 480 runners-up awards of $4,000 each. All awards are given in equal installments over a four-year period. Awards are evenly distributed among male and female winners.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,250,000.

Applications are available online on the Elks National Foundation (ENF) website. Students must submit the following materials: a completed application; a 500-word essay on the topic listed on the application; parental financial statement; official transcript of grades (including a list of seventh semester classes); official SAT/ACT scores; and a completed counselor report. The student may also include copies of exhibits, which are examples of a student's achievement in scholarship, leadership, athletics, dramatics, community service or other activities. The student should review the application for specific instructions on preparing the application materials. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
