Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Funding for NJ STARS awards is dependent upon annual state appropriations.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of New Jersey for a minimum of 12 consecutive months prior to high school graduation.
  4. Must rank in the top 15 percent of his/her high school class.
  5. Must be a graduating high school senior. Please note: Students who graduate from high school and do not demonstrate college readiness will be given up to one year to gain the skills they need to become college ready.
  6. Must enroll in 12 or more credit hours per semester.
  7. Must plan to attend a New Jersey county college located within his/her home county.

Additional Information: The New Jersey Student Tuition Assistance Reward Scholarship (NJ STARS) Program is an initiative created by the State of New Jersey that provides New Jersey's highest achieving students with free tuition at their home county college. Students must apply for all forms of state and federal need-based grants and merit scholarships andfsubmit any requested documentation to complete and verify application data within established state deadlines. Students can contact the financial aid office at their home county college for additional information.

Award Amount: Awards cover the cost of tuition, less any state and/or federal grants and scholarships, for up to five semesters. The award covers these charges for up to 18 credit hours per semester. Students must maintain full-time enrollment with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to remain eligible.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,580.

There is no specific application required to apply. Eligible students will be automatically considered upon admission to an eligible New Jersey college or university. To determine award eligibility, each participating college or university may require students to submit additional forms or supplemental information before scholarship eligibility can be determined. Students should contact his/her institution for additional details. Students must also file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for this award. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and in college financial aid offices. The FAFSA must be received by Sep. 15 to be considered for the entire academic year or by Feb. 15 to be considered for the spring semester only. Additional information required by the college or university must be submitted by September 15 for the fall semester and March 15 for the spring semester.
