Number of Awards & Eligibility: 3 scholarship awards offered annually. 25 Honorable Mention awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be between the ages of 13-18.
  2. Must be attending grades 8-12.
  3. This award is for U.S. and/or Canadian students.
  4. Must be attending junior high or high school in the United States or Canada, or an American school abroad, or be enrolled in a U.S. homeschool program.

Description: This award is for U.S. and international students between the ages of 13-18 and attending grades 8-12. Students must submitt a blog about a travel experience and must sign up for the MyFamilyTravels.com community prior to submitting their entry.

Additional Information: Family Travel Forum (FTF), a trusted vacation planning resource, and the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW), a non-profit organization that promotes responsible journalism, are offering scholarships to encourage teens to share their travel experiences in words and images. Blogs will be judged on originality, quality of expression, and a sense of place, as well as in accordance with standard rules of English grammar, mechanics and spelling. A panel of esteemed professional writers and editors from the Society of American Travel Writers will make the final selection of winners. All applicants will be contacted by email when the Judges have completed selecting the quarter-final round of blogs and have posted them online. Only finalists will be contacted for follow-up documents. Finalists will be contacted and will be asked to send a copy of his/her transcript from his/her school, as well as a permission letter from a parent/guardian if under 18. More information about the Parent Permission Letter is available on the Scholarship FAQ page. These documents must be received by email, fax or snail mail.

Award Amount: The first-place recipient receives $1,000, the second-place recipient receives $500, and the third-place recipient receives $250. All prizes are offered annually and are non-renewable. There will also be 20 Honorable Mention awards; each of these students will receive travel gifts. *Please note: All of the top travel blogs are posted on Family Travel Forum’s site www.MyFamilyTravels.com.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $583.

Please note: Students must sign up for the MyFamilyTravels.com community and complete a profile on MyFamilyTravels.com (and include a photograph of themselves) prior to submitting the travel blog for this contest. Applications will be accepted from May 1 to July 12. Travel blogs must be submitted online using the FTF Teen Travel Scholarship Essay Submission Form. The blog must comply with the following requirements: be no more than 600 words in length; be illustrated by at least one photo, digital artwork or video; and include practical details so that others can choose to follow in his/her footsteps. Details may include names of attractions, museums, themeparks, resorts, restaurants, the local beach, etc., with URLs as appropriate. The student should use the editing tools provided to make paragraph breaks or add punctuation, and to upload photos and/or video. Trip must have been taken in the last five years. Multiple submissions are not allowed; only one blog per entrant is accepted; travel blog must be applicant's original creation and must not have been previously published. All entries must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET on the deadline date. Late entries will not be considered.
