Number of Awards & Eligibility: 17 awards offered annually. Please note: Of the allocated awards, one is awarded to a student from the cities of Greensboro or High Point and another is awarded to a senior at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics who is from an eligible county.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must plan to attend one of the following universities: NC State University (NCSU); University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNCCH); University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG).
  3. Must reside in and attend a high school in one of the following counties: Alamance, Bertie, Caswell, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Swain or Warren.
  4. Must be graduating high school senior at the time of application.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  6. Must plan to enroll full time.
  7. Must be a resident of North Carolina.

Description: This award is available to North Carolina high school seniors who are planning to enroll full time at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Awards are based on financial need, merit, leadership, and character. Scholars can receive additional funding to study abroad.

Additional Information: The Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship was first created in 1955 through the trust and estate of the late Aubrey Lee Brooks. The award is administered through the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority and is fully funded by the Brooks Foundation. Applicants must demonstrate unmet financial need. Financial need is determined based on the information submitted on the FAFSA form. Selection for the Brooks Scholarship is highly competitive. Successful applicants must have excellent high school grades and SAT or ACT scores. Applicants are expected to have participated in extracurricular activities, volunteered in their community, and/or been regularly employed. Selected Scholars typically demonstrate a high level of leadership within the organizations with which they work and volunteer.

Award Amount: The award amount is up to approximately one-half of the cost of an undergraduate education. For the current academic year, the maximum award is $12,000. The scholarship is renewable for three additional academic years (a total of eight semesters) provided the recipient has continued financial need, is enrolled full time, maintains a grade point average of at least 2.75, and demonstrates good citizenship. Selected Brooks Scholarship recipients may also request and receive additional funding for summer internships, research, study abroad, and/or a one-time computer stipend of up to $2,500.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $204,000.
