Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to 10 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must enroll full time at an accredited college or university.
  3. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  4. Must attend or have graduated from a high school located in San Mateo County or Santa Clara County, Ca.
  5. Must demonstrate community involvement over a period of several years.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a resident of California.
  8. Must be a graduating high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This award is available U.S. undergraduate and/or graduate students who attend or have graduated from a high school located in San Mateo County or Santa Clara County and are a resident of California. Students must also have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher and demonstrate community involvement over a period of several years.

Additional Information: This program was established in 1987 in memory of Dr. R. Carter Crain and Mildred E. Crain. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable high school graduates to pursue courses of study that they would otherwise be unable to follow due to limited financial means. The selection committee looks for academic promise, documented perseverance in activities outside the classroom, the quality of the personal statement, and personal characteristics such as honesty, good judgment and community service. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Students may apply for both the Crain Educational Grant Program and the Hazel Reed Scholarship Program, but may receive only one of these scholarships.

Award Amount: Up to 5,000 annually, non-renewable. Recipients may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $50,000.

Applications are available on the Silicon Valley Community Foundation website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: two letters of recommendation (the letters must be from the people listed on the application); an official transcript of grades; a personal statement addressing the topics listed on the application; evidence of financial need as described on the application; and proof of U.S. citizenship (photocopy of birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers). The complete application packet must be completed online by the deadline date.
