Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior OR have graduated from high school within the last two years and be currently enrolled in college/university.
  3. Must be graduating or have graduated from a North Carolina high school.
  4. Must be of Hispanic background (i.e., one parent is fully Hispanic or both parents are half Hispanic).
  5. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  6. Must be committed to public service and community development.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to high school seniors at and recent (within two years) graduates of North Carolina high schools who are of Hispanic/Latino descent. Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Additional Information: The following scholarships are included within this program: the Progress Energy Hispanic Engineering Scholarship, for students who plan to pursue electrical, mechanical, nuclear, chemical or civil engineering; and the "Juntos Program" Scholarship, for students who that have participated in the Juntos program within the last 2 years in Juntos 4-H Club and/or Afterschool Program, Juntos Academy, and/or Academy Team Captain. Students must indicate on the application if they meet the additional qualifications and wish to be considered for these scholarships. Preference will be given to foreign-born applicants or the native born children of foreign-born parents. Recipients will be chosen based on: family economic need, community involvement, academic achievement, volunteerism, and leadership. Award annoucements are mailed by March 5.

Award Amount: $500 to $2,500 annually, renewable for up to three additional years if the recipient submits a renewal application, an official transcript, and proof of enrollment for the following academic year prior to the start of the new school year. Upon receipt of the recipient's official letter of acceptance and contact information for the school's financial aid office, all scholarship awards will be sent directly to the college or university where the recipient enrolls. One payment will be made prior to the start of the fall semester directly to the higher education instruction selected by the recipient. Scholarship funds will be designated for tuition, room, and board only. If these expenses have already been met, the award will be placed into an account at the educational institution for use by the student as needed.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,000.

Applications are available online on the North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals (NCSHP) website. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: two letters of recommendation from a pastor, high school teacher, principal, employer, or other community leader (must be submitted in separate sealed, signed envelopes); an official high school or college transcript (must be in a signed, sealed envelope); a personal statement of 500 words addressing the topics listed on the application; and the first two pages of his/her parents' (and his/her, if applicable) federal tax return. The student's full name must appear on each document submitted. All documents should be unfolded and unstapled (except for those in sealed envelopes), and must be on 8.5" x 11" white paper. The application and all supporting materials must be placed together in a single large envelope. Application packets must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
