Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must not have completed more than 12 semester hours or one-third of the required semester hours towards MLS/MLIS/MIS prior to June 1 of the year awarded.
  4. Must be pursuing studies in library science with a specialty in new media. New media is defined as digital technology's transformation of business and culture during the past 25-plus years, clarifying the evolution of digital communications and human-computer interaction.
  5. Must attend a school with an ALA-accredited master's degree program. A list of the eligible programs is available at www.ala.org/accreditedprograms/directory/search.

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. and Canadian citizens/permanent residents who pursue a master's degree in library science with a specialty in new media. The student must attend an ALA-accredited institution.

Additional Information: The scholarship was created in memory of Peter Lyman, former university librarian and professor emeritus of the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley. Factors considered in making these awards include: academic excellence; leadership; and evidence of commitment to a career in librarianship. Achievement in these areas may best be demonstrated by statements indicating the nature of library and other experience, by professional references, and by the personal statement included in the online application.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable. This scholarship also includes a travel stipend to attend the ALA Midwinter Conference.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available online on the American Library Association (ALA) website. Scholarship information is available by clicking the 'Scholarships by Specialty or Practice Area' link, and then clicking on the 'New Media' link. Please note: The student need only complete one application to apply for all scholarships for which he/she is eligible. The following components are required for all ALA scholarships: a completed online application (includes a personal statement); contact information for three professional references, who will be sent instructions for completion of the online reference form; and official academic transcripts from the institution where the student received his/her bachelor's degree and the institution where he/she is currently enrolled. Transcripts may be sent to ALA directly from the institution or be submitted by the student in an unopened envelope. Only official, sealed transcripts will be accepted. All application materials must be submitted online by the deadline.
