Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 20 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be an entering college freshman or a current undergraduate or graduate student.
  4. Must be legally blind. An individual who is legally blind is one who cannot see better than 20/200 in the best eye with glasses or contact lenses or whose visual field in the best eye is 20 degrees or less at the widest diameter with glasses or contact lenses.
  5. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students (including entering freshmen) who are legally blind. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher, unless extenuating circumstances exist.

Additional Information: American Council of the Blind (ACB) scholarship winners are expected to attend the ACB National Conference and Convention unless there are circumstances beyond their control and with the approval of the organization.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $3,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,250.

Applications are available on the American Council for the Blind (ACB) website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following materials: an autobiographical sketch of no more than 500 words (details listed on application); a certification of legal blindness from an ophthalmologist, optometrist, or physician; certified transcripts from his/her current school (must include high school transcripts if an entering freshman or undergraduate transcripts if a graduate student); two letters of recommendation from a current or recent instructor, career counselor, or employer; and proof of acceptance from a postsecondary school. If not available at the time the application is submitted, it must be submitted as soon as it is available. Students continuing at the same school attended during prior year do not need to submit this document. All application materials must be submitted to the address provided, with the exception of the certification of legal blindness and transcripts. These documents may be mailed to the address provided. Emailed documents must be in Microsoft Word or Rich Text formats. Electronic documents must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CST on the deadline date. Mailed documents must be postmarked by the deadline date.
