Number of Awards & Eligibility: Fifteen awards offered annually. Three awards will be given in each division.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be the daughter, step-daughter, son, or step-son, grandson, granddaughter, step-grandson or step-granddaughter of a veteran who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion.
  4. Must have a parent, step-parent, grandparent, or step-grandparent who is currently an active member of the U.S. military or one who actively served in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Granada Conflict, Lebanon Conflict, Panama Conflict, or Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
  5. Must have completed 50 hours of community service during high school years.
  6. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. students who are current high school seniors and have completed 50 or more hours of community service during high school are eligible for this award. Students must be the sons or daughters of veterans who served in the armed forces during the eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion.

Application requirements for the Children of Warriors National President Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letters (4)
  • Essay
  • FAFSA by 03/01/2017
  • Official Transcript
  • Personal statement
  • Test scores
  • Service letter
  • Discharge paper
Additional Information: No unit may enter more than one candidate in the department competition. Each department is restricted to submitting one candidate to the divisional competition. Previous National President's Scholarship recipients are not eligible for further consideration.

Award Amount: Fifteen awards provided annually. All scholarships are awarded on one-time basis and are non-renewable. The scholarship must be used within 24 months of the date the winner receives notification by national headquarters. Half of the award will be paid directly to the school for the first semester upon notification from the school that the student has registered. The balance of the award will be paid to the school upon notification from the school that the student has registered for the second semester.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.
