Together We Rise

Number of Awards & Eligibility: 15 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be 17 to 23 years of age.
  4. Must have graduated from high school OR be currently a high school senior. The student must have been accepted into or expect to be accepted into an accredited, Pell-eligible college or other postsecondary school (e.g., trade school, cosmetology school, etc.).
  5. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  6. Must have been in public or private foster care for the 12 consecutive months leading up to and including his/her 18th birthday; OR have been adopted or placed into legal guardianship from foster care after his/her 13th birthday; OR have been orphaned for at least one year at the time of his/her 18th birthday. The student must have been in foster care in the United States.
  7. Must live OR attend school in Texas.

Description: This full tuition scholarship is open to U.S. high school seniors and graduates who are 17 to 23 years of age and are/were in public or private foster care, adopted or placed into legal guardianship from foster care, or orphaned. Students must be living or attending school in Texas, and must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Additional Information: Through the generous introduction by Hope D. Smith with her husband Robert F. Smith, the president and founding board of director of the Fund ll Foundation, Together We Rise has partnered with the Fund ll Foundation to support youth in foster care with financial, educational, and wrap around support. Together We Rise board members review all applications, and support is given based upon merit and need.

Award Amount: Up to $90,000. Recipients are given the following support: five years of financial support to help with tuition, books, and tutors; a monthly housing allowance as well as housing for summer and winter breaks; a laptop or musical instrument; dorm supplies; personal and career-focused mentors; and emotional and wrap-around services throughout the year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $90,000.

Applications are available on the Together We Rise website. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: proof of ward of the court, foster care, adoption, or guardianship; two letters of recommendation (from teachers, case workers, counselors, etc.); a photo of himself/herself; an official sealed high school transcript; and an essay of three to four pages in length addressing the topic listed on the application. The essay must be in MLA format and free from grammatical errors. Applications must be submitted online by the deadline date.
