Number of Awards & Eligibility: Each year, the Virginia Department of Education will determine the total number of scholarships to award after ascertaining funds available for the award in consultation with the Meade Fund trustee. In the most recent year for which information is available, there were 26 awards given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must plan to enroll at a Virginia college or university.
  2. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  3. This award is for U.S. students.
  4. Must complete high school in Virginia.
  5. Must be a resident of Virginia.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must demonstrate academic achievement.
  8. Must demonstrate financial need.

Description: This award is available to Virginia high school seniors who are planning to attend college in Virginia. Students must demonstrate academic achievement and financial need.

Application requirements for the Granville P. Meade Scholarship Program are:

  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • Standardized test scores
  • Recommendation letters (4+)
Additional Information: After submission of student applications, each public school principal will submit all applications received to the superintendent of the division. Private schools will submit their applications to their own associations. These applications should be received in the superintendents' and associations' offices by March 25, 2019. Each division superintendent will review the applications received and select the five most qualified high school seniors in the division. The division superintendent will forward these five applications to the chairperson of his/her regional study group screening committee by April 15, 2019. Each chairperson will submit the five best applications to the CTE Resource Center by May 6, 2019. Private school and home-school associations also will be asked to submit their five best applications to the CTE Resource Center by May 6, 2019. Granville P. Meade scholars will be selected based upon financial need and merit. Therefore, applicants will need to demonstrate academic achievement, extracurricular activities, good character as determined by letters of recommendation, and financial need. Scholarship recipients will be notified by May 31, 2019.

Award Amount: Up to $2,000 annually, renewable for up to three additional years as long as the student remains enrolled in a Virginia college or university and maintains a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,932.

Applications are available from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: an official high school transcript; a record of his/her standardized test scores; and confidential letters of recommendation from four or more people not related to him/her, including his/her high school principal. These letters should give specific information in regard to the student's character, personality, and ability. Particular reference must be made to the student's need and his/her family's financial ability. Students must submit scholarship applications to their high school principal by March 15, 2019.
