Number of Awards & Eligibility: 100 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  2. Must enroll full time in at least 12 units of course work.
  3. Must be between the ages of 17 and 23.
  4. Must have been in the foster care system in San Diego, California.
  5. Must have been a foster child.
  6. This award is for international and U.S. students.

Description: This award is for students who were in the foster care system in San Diego, California. Students must be between 17 and 23 years of age, and have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

Application requirements for the Guardian Scholars Program are:

  • Dependency/Ward of the court documentation
Additional Information: The Guardian Scholars Program is a nationally-recognized program that provides financial assistance to former foster youth to help support their efforts to obtain a university, community college or vocational school education. Recipients must participate in their campus's former foster youth program, if such a program exists. They must also maintain full-time enrollment, a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (cumulative and semester/quarter), and a part-time job of at least 10 hours per week (work study or volunteer). Applicants will be notified of the Guardian Scholars Scholarship Committee's final decisions no later than the first week of May. Please note: A separate scholarship is available for full tuition/fees and books to National University for online programming. Students are encouraged to research the university before applying for this scholarship. Recipients must follow the same expectations as recipients of the traditional Guardian Scholars awards.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 to help cover costs not typically covered by financial aid, such as rent assistance, clothing, transportation, and application fees. All awards are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available online on the Promises2Kids Foundation's website. The student must create an account using his/her email address and a unique password to access the scholarship application. As part of the application, the student must submit a double-spaced essay of three pages or less in 12-point Times New Roman font addressing the four questions regarding his/her foster care experience and college goals listed on the application. If applying for the National University scholarships, the student must address the additional three questions. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: official transcripts that reflect his/her most recent grades and schedule; and a copy of dependency/ward of the court documentation. The completed application, including the essay, must be submitted online by the deadline date. Additional documentation must be mailed to the address provided and must be received by the deadline date.
