Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered each year may vary and is dependent on the number of qualified applicants and the amount of funding available. In the previous academic year, a total of 381 awards disbursed.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a resident of Louisiana.
  4. Must be currently enrolled at a public high school and be concurrently enrolled at a Louisiana public college.
  5. Must plan to enroll in no more than six credit hours per semester.
  6. Must be an 11th or 12th grade high school student at time of application.
  7. Must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher on all courses attempted.
  8. Must enroll in a vocational course of study leading to an industry-based certification in a demand occupation as designated by LOSFA. A list of eligible courses of study is available at http://www.osfa.la.gov/MainSitePDFs/Top_Demand_List.pdf.

Description: This award is for Louisiana resident high school students who are currently in 11th or 12th grade. The student must be concurrently enroll at a Lousiana public college in a vocational course of study leading to an industry-based certification in an eligible demand Occupation.

Additional Information: The TOPS Tech Early Start award provides funding for eligible 11th and 12th grade students attending a Louisiana public high school who wish to concurrently enroll for up to six credit hours per semester at a public college in a vocational course of study leading to an industry-based certification in a 'Top Demand Occupation'. The student's high school will determine whether the student is eligible to participate in the TOPS-Tech Early Start program and approve or disapprove the student’s participation in the program. In addition to all other eligibility requirements, the student must: achieve a minimum passing score or higher in English and mathematics on the Graduate Exit Exam (GEE); score a 15 or higher on the English and mathematics subsections of the ACT Plan Assessment; and have an approved '5-Year Education and Career Plan'.

Award Amount: Up to $600 annually, renewable for one additional year provided the student remains in good standing as an 11th or 12th grade student (as verified by the high school).  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $223.
