Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Scholarships are awarded to 25 percent of the eligible applicants according to IRS regulation.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school or home school senior graduating or earning a GED between Aug. 1, 2015, and July 31, 2016.
  3. Must be the dependent of an actively employed Walmart associate (employee) within any division of Walmart for at least six consecutive months as of the application deadline date.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. permanent legal resident.
  5. Must enroll for fall 2016 as a full-time freshman at a two- or four-year college or university. The school must be an accredited U.S. institution, and listed on the official website for the U.S. Department of Education (http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.aspx). Military academies are not approved institutions.
  6. Must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Description: This award is for graduating high school seniors who are dependents of actively employed Walmart associates within any division of Walmart for at least six consecutive months as of the application deadline. Students must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and must demonstrate financial need.

Additional Information: All students must have financial need and be able to demonstrate the need with required documents. ISTS will provide a Selection Committee, independent of Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, to ensure the impartial and confidential evaluation of applications. Selections are based on academics and financial need. Winner and non-winner notifications will be emailed in early May. Dependents of the Walmart Board of Directors or of the Walmart officers (Vice President and above) are not eligible to apply. Students with other funds that pay entirely for tuition, books, fees, and on-campus room and board are also not eligible to receive this award.

Award Amount: $3,250 annually, renewable for up to three additional years. The scholarship is disbursed in installments of $1,625 and can only be used for fall and spring semesters. Funds must be applied to expenses such as: undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and on-campus room and board. To remain eligible to renew their award, scholars must: be continuously enrolled as a full-time student each semester/term; and maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Please note: Students who are attending a two-year institution must transfer to a four-year institution by their third year of school. If a recipient is not enrolled at a four-year institution by his/her third year, the scholarship will be forfeited.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $14,000.

Applications are available online from the Walmart Dependent Scholarship website. Prior to completing the application, the student must print out and read the program guidelines, FAQs, and the application checklist/cover sheet. The applicant must then create an account and take an eligibility quiz. If the applicant passes the eligibility quiz, the remainder of the application will launch automatically. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following documents by uploading them into the online application: a current U.S. federal income tax return from the individual who claimed him/her as a dependent; an official or unofficial high school transcript showing grades and grade point average through the first semester of the senior year (must contain his/her full name and the name of his/her school); and his/her current federal Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR is returned after filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.gov, from high school guidance offices, and from college financial aid offices. Please note: The FAFSA submission confirmation page is not a SAR and will not be accepted in place of a SAR. The application must be submitted online by 5:00 p.m. CST on the deadline date.
